Fish, seals and other sea creatures are clapping their fins today as Chile announces it’s creating the largest marine sanctuary in the Americas.

It’s an area as big as Italy.

National Geographic says it’s a Pac-Man shaped area hundreds of miles off the Chilean coast, surrounding the Desventurdadas Islands.

Talk about remote! It takes a 2-day boat ride from the Chilean coast just to get there.

Too far for you?

No worries.

And there is even more good marine news closer to home.

The same day Chile made it’s announcement about The Desventurdadas Islands, the United States announced two new marine sanctuaries.

One is 875 square miles on the western side of Lake Michigan. It includes 39 shipwrecks.

Wisconsin Public Radio says folks can still have a say on what that marine sanctuary will look like.

The second marine sanctuary announced by the US is a 14-square-mile area of the Mallows Bay-Potomac River in Maryland. That area has almost 200 shipwrecks, including a fleet of WWI wooden steamships.
