Sea Lion Pup Climbs Aboard For Ride With Shocked Surfer
One playful sea lion pup gave surfer Dan Murphy a day in the waves he will never forget.
Murphy tells NBC San Diego that he was just waiting to catch a wave near San Diego when he felt something wiggle his board and crawl up his back.
No telling what kind of creature was rising from the Pacific Ocean.
Murphy was sure delighted to find it was a playful sea lion pup who wanted to go for a ride.
Murphy’s friend, Eileen Quintela, captured the magic moments.
Murphy says he’s been surfing this area of the California coast for years. And he’s often seen the pups, but he says he’s never seen them interact like the love and fun he got from his new friend.
Murphy said the pup did not appear malnourished and suspects he was one of the sea lions rehabilitated by SeaWorld trainers and then returned to the wild, as the little guy appeared so comfortable around humans.
The pup held on to Murphy for about 20 minutes before crawling into his lap “like a puppy,” he said.
“He spent well over an hour on my board,” Murphy said.
