184-Year-Old Tortoise Does Something For First Time In His Life

184-years is a long time to wait for this, but from the look on this tortoise’s face, it was worth the wait.

Johnanthan the tortoise got his first bath this week.

Veterinarian Joe Hollins did the honors using a loofah, soft brush and sponge.

The Daily Mail
reports that Johnathan arrived on St. Helena Island when he was 50 years old.
That was in 1882!

In his time on St Helena he has seen 28 British governors come and go. Eight British monarchs from George IV to Elizabeth II have been crowned during his lifetime and 51 British Prime Ministers have served at 10 Downing Street.

Dr. Hollins says there is no medical reason the tortoise needed a scrub, but the island is expecting an unnamed royal visitor and they want Johnathan to look his best.

That meant decades of dirt, grime and bird poop on his shell had to go.

They made sure to use the mild soap and soft touch to not damage the shell.

Dr. Hollins says Johnathan was a superstar during his first-ever bath.

“Jonathan stood like a statue when I was washing him, I don’t know whether that was the vibrations he found soothing or he was thinking “at last, I’ve had my first bath!”
