Shooting Survivor Inspired To Become A Doctor With A Wonderful Twist

Shooting survivor Kevin Morton, Jr. was inspired to go to medical school. He's now graduated from Michigan State and will start his residency at the same hospital that saved his life.

Shooting survivor Kevin Morton, Jr. remembers the night his life changed forever.

He was working at an Arby’s restaurant in Detroit, closing up, when he was shot multiple times during a robbery.

His family was told chances were he would not survive.

But the doctors at St. John’s hospital and in particular, Dr. Dharti Sheth-Zelmanski, would not give up on this young man.

The road back was painful and difficult.

The long stay in the hospital also gave Kevin the chance to think about the purpose in his life.

NBC News was there this week when Kevin graduated medical school at Michigan State, on his way to becoming a new trauma surgeon.

There was also one special person there who wouldn’t miss this day.
