Uber Passenger Makes It Possible For Driver To See His Son Compete In Rio

Penn State's Darrell Hill will compete for the USA in shot put at the Rio Olympics. Thanks to an Uber passenger, his dad, Ellis Hill, will get to go and see him compete.

Turns out there is so much more to Uber than getting a ride.

One very grateful Uber driver is finding that out.

The Washington Post reports driver Ellis Hill found that out as he gave passenger Liz Willock a ride as she was leaving the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

The two got to chatting about one thing and another when the subject of the Olympics came up.

Liz mentioned she knew someone who would be competing.

Ellis did her one better.

He said his son was competing!

Sure enough, Ellis’s son, Darrell Hill, is representing the USA in the shot put.

Liz asked the obvious next question, “Are you going?”

Sadly, Ellis said he didn’t have the funds to make the trip to Rio.

The conversation could’ve ended there.

Except Liz made a tremendous offer.

“What if I could get you there?” she asked.

With that, she set up a GoFundMe page.

Liz called it, “Send Darrell’s Dad To Rio.”

It only took days.

Generous strangers kicked in enough to top off the $7,500 goal.

Liz has since closed the account to donations since the goal has been met.

The Post says there still are a few obstacles to overcome, like getting Ellis a passport, but Liz is helping with that, too.

Meanwhile, Ellis tells The Post that his son is so excited that his dad will be there.

Already has two tickets waiting for him on the days of his competition.

So many people are getting on Team Hill.

Even Uber gave Ellis a $1,000 ride credit and free meal for when he’s in Rio.

Ellis Hill is one grateful, proud and excited dad.
