Friendly Puppy Who Flunked Out Of K9 Police Academy Gets Awesome New Job
What an honor for a dog to make it through the police academy and become part of a hardworking K9 unit.
Such was not the fate for Gavel, the German Shepherd puppy in Australia who has flunked out of the police academy.
Gavel’s problem?
Simply, he’s too nice.
Things started out promising. The dog squad sergeant said, “He is confident, with no nervous tendencies, and shows a willingness to retrieve, a prey drive, ball drive and can be motivated by food for a reward.”
7News says it turns out Gavel likes people so much, the trainers were concerned he wouldn’t have what it takes to take down the bad guys.
Quite a beginning for Gavel who has been fostered at the governor’s mansion in Queensland since he was six weeks old.
The BBC reports Gavel showed how important it is to have friends in high places when the police in Australia felt he “did not display the necessary aptitude for a life on the front line.”
“Ferocious,” was hardly the word that came to mind with Gavel growing up at the governor’s mansion in Queensland, Australia.
The governor, himself, Paul de Jersey, stepped in and gave Gavel a new job.
“He has outgrown four ceremonial coats, undergone a career change (his official title is now Gavel VRD, ‘Vice-Regal Dog’), and brought untold joy to the lives of the governor, Mrs de Jersey, Government House staff, and the thousands of Queenslanders who have since visited the estate,” the office of Governor Paul de Jersey said.

Instead of tackling criminals, Gavel will now be responsible for greeting visitors and tour groups at the governor’s mansion.
Sounds like a job, this sweet pup was born to do.
