Stranger Joins Widower He Meets In Check Out Line To Celebrate Late Wife’s Birthday

This is what caught Gregory R. Johnson's eye. A widower on a mission to make someone's birthday very special.

Gregory R. Johnson is a stranger no more.

Not to a man who caught his attention Tuesday inside a Kroger supermarket in Greenwood, Indiana.

The man was an older gentleman making his way through the market in one of those motorized grocery carts.

His basket was filled with red roses and a birthday cake.

Johnson couldn’t help himself. He said, “It looks like you’ve got a big night planned.”

Johnson tells CBS News, “He glanced up at me with the saddest eyes I believe I’ve ever seen and told me his story.”

His name is Jim. His beloved wife died five years ago and he still makes a big deal for her birthday which was Tuesday.

Still buys her flowers.

Still buys her a cake.

And then, heartbreakingly, he goes home and eats the cake by himself.

That’s when Greg gave the most valuable gift of all.

His time.

Gregory R. Johnson takes time to speak with a stranger, an elderly widower who is buying flowers and cake to commemorate his late wife's birthday.

This is what caught Gregory R. Johnson’s eye. A stranger on a mission to make someone’s birthday very special.

He stood in that Kroger for 90 minutes asking Jim about his life and his wife.

These two went on so long the manager asked if he could take their picture.

A photo that speaks for itself.

Jim is beaming, simply because one man took the time to give time.

And care.

That’s when Jim dared to ask.

Would Greg even consider coming back to his home to help arrange the flowers and eat some cake.

Who has time for that?

Greg made time.

They sat at Jim’s kitchen table, looked at old photos, and shared stories about Jim’s wife, Gloria.

Greg says they’ll be getting together for lunch or dinner real soon.

He wrote on Facebook that an ordinary evening became an extraordinary one. “Hopefully I made that little old man’s night a tad bit better,” wrote Johnson, “because he certainly made mine one of the best I’ve had in a long time.”
