July 2, 2007: Book Etiquette

Question of the day is, "How is this book stuff supposed to work?" As I've shared,  I'm hard at work on my first book, What's Possible!  Creating Possibilities Beyond Life's Greatest Obstacles.  Much like this website, it will be a series of inspiring stories.  Kind of like the "Overcoming Obstacles" page in print.

To make the book special, I'm working on stories that you will only see there.  Just like with DarynKagan.com, every interview I do makes me feel like I won the lottery for the coolest job in media.  It's my job to talk to these amazing people.

Now, with the
website, if I want, I can turn around and share the story the next day. But, I have to wait until the book comes out next May to share those stories with you.

Or do I? What am I supposed to do when I spend an amazing hour with someone like novelist Jacquelyn Mitchard.  That's what I did this morning.  Man, I could've talked to her all day!

Jackie's first novel, Deep End of The Ocean, was Oprah's first selection when she started her book club.  She has a great story how she actually erased Oprah's message three times, thinking someone was playing a joke on her.

Even better, and oh so moving, is the story of the incredible obstacles and grief she overcame to write that book in the first place.  Now, for that story, I will have you wait for What's Possible!

Meanwhile, I can tell you that Jackie has her 12th novel coming out in August.  It's called, Still Summer.  Her publicist, Jocelyn Kelley, was nice enough to send me an advance copy.  It's just what I needed.  I've been reading a lot of "wu-wu" and spiritual books.  Those are great and feed my soul.  But summer means time to read a good novel.  If you're looking for a page turner that has some depth and meaning to it, Still Summer is the book for  you.  You know the kind you don't have to hide behind another book like Abraham Lincoln's biography while sitting by the pool or beach.  I'm about a quarter of the way through, and I have a feeling a really bad thing is about to happen to these lovely characters.  Uh oh.

Still Summer
comes out in August.  Don't worry I'll remind you.

And if the editors at Meredith Books are checking this blog and think even this was too much to share about "What's Possible!"  Oops.  Sorry.
