September 24, 2007: Thank You

Happy National Thank You Day!

The folks at Merci Chocolates are trying to start a new tradition—make the last Monday of September a national day of gratitude.  Today is the first one ever.

When the Merci PR people approached me about the idea, I'll admit, I did have a moment of cynicism.  "Just a marketing ploy to sell stuff, " I thought momentarily.

Just like some people pooh pooh Valentine's Day and Mother's Day as Hallmark created moments.

Then I thought, "Is this really so bad?"

What's wrong with selling a day of gratitude?  If the Merci folks sell a few boxes of chocolate in the meantime, well, power to them.

Power.

That's what it really comes down to.  And each one of it has it.

We each have the power to decide to give thanks and how we want to do it.

About four or five years ago when I was starting to change the way I look at the world, my friend Lisa suggested to me that until I learn to be happy with what I have and grateful for it, all the stuff I was longing for would not show up.

"Talk about wacko ideas!" I thought.  Clearly, she didn't know about how I was dying inside for, well, a list that would go longer than this blog.  I certainly wasn't going to get all that stuff by being satisfied with the status quo!

Fast forward to now.  I smile at the wound up woman that I was.  So much has happened.  So much has changed.  Not the least of which is my daily practice of beginning and ending each day saying the things I'm grateful for.

By letting go and being happy with what is here now, more has shown up than I could have ever dreamed four or five years ago.

So, in my book, or my blog, as the case may be.  Thank You, is life's great magic trick.  Practice it, and amazing things, people and events just show up.

If the folks at Merci Chocolates want to use that to sell some candy, well, then, to them I say, "Thank you."
