Of course, I'm watching the Southern California fire story with great interest and attention.
That is home.
My mother is fine in West LA. However, my brother, sister-in-law and two nephews live in the northern part of San Diego County. They awoke Monday morning to a reverse 911 call telling them they need to be ready to go.
So far, so good. They are able to stay put, unlike more than an estimated 800,000 Southern Californians that are forced to be somewhere other than their home.
Interesting to watch how we each act in crisis. Apparently, my six-year-old nephew, Joe, saw another family in their cul-de-sac packing up and treating things with more intensity than his more laid back parents.
Apparently, Joe thought this response was more appropriate, came in the house and wanted to know why HIS family wasn't packing things up and leaving.
My brother explained that he thought the family was safe for now and best off waiting at home.
Joe would have none of that and announced he was going upstairs to start packing his things.
He went up to his room and packed his Halloween costume, a toy sword, and his favorite pillow. I gotta respect a man with a plan!
On a more serious note, I know DarynKagan.com visitors are the type who want to do something to help. I found this great list in the Los Angeles Times. It has everything from how to donate to the Red Cross to how to help out pet owners who need evacuate.
Thank you to all of you have sent email asking about my Southern California family!
