It looks like my call for other "Daryns" out there has really taken off.
I shared with you a few days ago how 8th grader Daryn Skjefte in Warner, South Dakota wrote in about our shared name. And I put her to work as a positive news reporter. Daryn did a rockin' job and actually just offers this update:
I thought I should let you know that our volleyball team has made it to the state tourney this year! We haven't been there since 2002. We won districts and regions, and now it's on to state! Just thought you might want some more positive things in your life! Thanks again! Daryn Skjefte
Congrats, Daryn!
I also shared a photo of my little namesake, Daryn Schell, daughter of my college roommate, Heidi.
Any others? I put out the call.
Never in my wildest dreams did I expect a bird to show up. Yet, that's what has happened.

Sophia Andrews of wrote in that she has a Daryn living in her house. She writes:
I am referring to my pet finch, Daryn; named after you, of course! I've attached a photo of him and his twin brother, Darwin! Daryn is the one on the top left of the photo.
They are so tame that we were able to have them pose on the Christmas tree for photos. As you can see, they look exactly alike! But, I can tell them apart, since I'm their mom...lol.
I named Darwin first. He was named after Charles Darwin, the English naturalist who is famous for his study of evolution. His most notorious study organisms were the finches he studied in the Galapagos Islands.
Since the second finch came from the same brood, and looked identical to his brother, I knew that I wanted to give him a similar name. The name, "Daryn," was a natural choice because of the similarity in sound and spelling to the name, "Darwin." But what made me choose it over other eligible names was you! The name has such a positive association for me, as you are someone whom I really look up to. Basically, I named my bird after you.
Sophia, I have to say, I am at a loss for chirps. Thank you for that honor.
Baby Daryn's mom, Heidi, shares that with her name, new acquaintances will tell her, "Oh, I had a dog named, 'Heidi.'" But, I don't think she's ever met a bird named, "Heidi." She is going to be very impressed with this honor because turns out, Heidi, is a total bird freak. She has one named, Connor, (named after no one in particular, that I know of.) She volunteers to count wild birds and watch hawks and things like that.
So kind of a full circle moment here.
Sophia, thanks for the honor. Send my best to Daryn and Darwin Finch.
Dare I ask---uh, any other Daryns out there?
