March 6, 2008: You Came Through Big Time

I sure do like it when that "ask and ye shall receive" thing works.

A couple days ago right here in this blog space I asked you to give me feedback on what some might think was a pretty radical statement that I made.

In my March 3rd blog, I said that I don't believe any of you want the thing that you think you want.  None of us do.  I think what we really want is what we think that thing will feel like.

And I asked all of you to tell me what you think.  The response was huge.  Thanks so much.

Out of all the email, one line in particular really stuck out.  Pamela Hudson wrote in to say she pretty much gets what I'm talking about.  And like all of us, she still has wishes and desires, REALLY BIG ONES, that she's hoping will come true.  They are living inside of her, ready to burst.

That leads to the line.  It's a quote Pamela says she keeps taped up on her computer.

The future enters into us, in order to transform us, long before it happens.
Ranier Maria Rilke wrote that line.

I had never heard that before.  As soon as I read it, though, I knew it fit as well as a custom knit sweater.

I can look back at so many instances now and see where that happened, where the future entered my soul long before it happened.  Have you been there?  In that place where suddenly a job, a relationship, a city no longer fits you.  It sure can be scary stuff, especially when you haven't received the information of what's next.  All you know, is that for some unknown reason, you no longer belong where you stand.

Now I'm going to know and hopefully not be so disconcerted.  That uneasy, "I don't fit here anymore" feeling will just be the future entering into me, in order to transform me.  "Oh, hello Future," I hope I will have the good grace and good manners to say.  I hope I will welcome it in, rather than freak out.

By the way, I'm listening to an absolutely awesome audio book that really helps with figuring out that next step.  Martha Beck's Follow Your North Star.  I'm listening on my iPod as I take Darla Dog on her long walks.  She gets to sniff the ground while I'm sniffing out my future.

I'm finding it delightful, fun, and the most practical guide I've come across for creating the job and relationship that really serves your soul.

You might want to check it out.

And, thanks Pamela Hudson for the wonderful quote!
