February 4, 2009: Let's Ask You

First off, did I spell, "February" correctly? Yep. Phew.  Anyone else out there who has to double check at the beginning of this month each year?  Maybe that's why they made it the shortest month, because it has the wackiest spelling.

That's not actually what I set out to ask you.  I want to get your opinion about an interview I'm doing later today.  This time I'll be the interviewee rather than the interviewer.

A reporter from the Atlanta Journal Constitution wants to ask me about seeing positive things during good times.  I think she must see me as some kind of anthropological investigation, like "How can you possibly see anything good happening right now?"  Like I'm a freak of nature.

Freaky-deak, perhaps, but I know I'm not alone in this based simply on the success and popularity of this website.

My short answer is "It's a choice."  You get to decide what you want to focus on and look at.  I am not anti-news.  I think it's important to be informed.  I just also think it's important to be inspired.  I choose to get my news, be up to date on what's happening in the world and beyond that, not dwell in the negativity.

If the end goal is to improve the world I believe I'll contribute most by expanding the positive than expanding the negative.

I'm also tossing around this idea of what is "bad?"  Is something bad simply because it's something you would never choose happen to you?

Every day the headlines blare about thousands of job losses.  I get that.  I lost my job at CNN two years ago.  Would've never chosen that.  And yes, it's one of the best things that ever happened to me.

What about these tough economic times? Again, it makes me think, "What is tough?"  I spent two weeks in Africa in December with children who have less than any American child could ever imagine.  These kids are among the happiest, most joyful children I've known.  And they have a faith in God that inspires me.

It all leads me to the place of the choice.  The choice of how you look at things and how you measure.

So that brings me around to you.  What do you think?  Why do you come to a place like DarynKagan.com?  What do you get out of focusing on the positive during what are considered challenging times?

Please come on over to our social online community and share your thoughts.
