February 27, 2009: Believing In Love Again

For anyone out there who needs to believe in love again, I want to make sure you see this story about my friend and former CNN colleague, Carol Lin.

Carol and I worked together for many years.  Her sweet husband, Will, also worked at CNN as a producer.  They tried for such a long time to get pregnant and when they did, it was a happy day indeed!

That is until about half-way through the pregnancy when doctors discovered Will had a rare cancerous tumor growing in his head.  He had gone to the dentist thinking he needed root canal or something, only to discover a massive tumor invading his sinuses and upper jaw.

There wasn't much doctors could do.  Will died a few months after baby Chloe was born.

There was Carol—a new mom, now a single mom, mourning the loss of the love of her life.  It was beyond sad.  She did what you have to do—getting up each morning to take care of this tiny creature.  But, she'll tell you that time is just a fog.

Then, just when it seemed Carol was getting the swing of this single-mom thing, CNN let her know her gig was going to change.  Her new responsibilities would involve way more travel than fit the needs of her family of two.

It was time to go.

She packed up Chloe and moved back to Southern California.  She got started on an ambitious new project—building websites that support families and patients going through medical crises.  Who better, right?

We were talking quite a bit, as she was excited to share all that she was learning about the internet world.  I figure I started from scratch, so I like to support my friends as they go for their dreams and share what I've learned.

Carol was in a flurry of meetings.  Yet, through all the "I met this person and that person," chats, she kept mentioning this guy, Mike.  At first, she said it was only about her web project.  He was very interested in that.  Okay.  I bought that for the first 1-2 coffees they had.  By meeting #8, I felt like I had to point out the obvious.

"Uh, Carol," I informed her, "I don't think this is about the web project."

"You don't?" she replied.

"No, I don't know how to tell you this, but I think this guy is actually interested in you and these meetings are actually dates," I explained.

"Really?" she was honestly surprised.  Yeah, we very smart women can be clueless sometimes.  Almost two years later we still get a laugh out of that.

I have since met Mike The Coffee Date quite a few times.  He is a great guy, crazy about Carol and Chloe, who is now 5. Carol believes he is a miracle sent by Will.

I'm thrilled to share that Carol and Mike got married this month in Hawaii.  Click here to see just how happy Carol is and for a reminder that miracles and love really do happen.
