submitted by Karama Neal Our dinner party conversations always turned to the same subjects: challenges in the schools, prejudice, economic disparities, the health care system, environmental management, and other problems in the world. We would get so frustrated that some guests would lament that there was nothing we could do. But, I knew differently. No one can do everything, but we all can do something.
So, in October 2004, I started a blog devoted to public service and ethics in action: So What Can I Do? It lists hundreds of small things we all can do to make our world a better place. I have included something for everyone, even those with little time or little money. It has been such a joy to learn about the many ways we can promote positive change. Because of the blog, I was able to include several ideas for social responsibility in my wedding. I was inspired to become a regular blood donor and even donated my daughter's umbilical cord blood. My husband and I have expanded our recycling, started composting, and mentoring, among other things.
Readers from all over the world have been inspired to take action in their communities. They leave comments and suggestions on the posts, which I often us to publicize more service opportunities. "Writing So What Can I Do?" has made me ever the optimist, more pro-active, and an unfailing believer in the power we each have make a difference. Most importantly, it has enabled the readers to do as Mahatma Gandhi says and "Be the change you want to see in the world."
