Mayor-elect Paige Cognetti will be the first female mayor of Scranton, Pennsylvania and the very pregnant Cognetti will be the first to give birth during her term in office.

Quite a story for a young woman who is taking on a huge challenge.

Paige Cognetti is the pregnant mayor-elect of Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She ran in a special election after Scranton’s then-mayor, Bill Courtright, pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges.

Cognetti stepped into the race as an independent.

Not a typical background

She’s originally from Oregon. She settled in her new hometown after marrying a Scranton native.

To those critics who tried to call her out for being relatively new to Scranton, she replies,  “Nothing really makes you more committed to your city and your environment…than realizing you’re going to have a baby. So I couldn’t be more committed.”

She brings an impressive resume, including a Harvard MBA, jobs at the Treasury Department and working for Goldman Sachs.

Taking on corruption

She served on the local school board where she took on corruption and long term contracts that hadn’t been put out for bid in decades.

She campaigned for Barack Obama in 2008, but ran as an independent, taking on the candidate who had been formally endorsed by the Democratic Party.

Cognetti is no longer a Democrat

Cognetti told CNN why she chose not to play by old party rules.

“I chose not to seek the nomination for the Democrats in this special election because I knew they would do it in their way, which they did,” she said. “They went behind closed doors, there were 26 electors — I still don’t even know who those people were — and they anointed a candidate and said he’s the candidate for mayor.””They basically thought that they were going to choose the next mayor, not the people.”Cognetti also said she has a complicated history with the party’s chairman, who she charged was responsible for some of the local corruption she had campaigned against.

Cognetti won with 36% of the vote, a result, many are calling a landslide.

She’ll fill out the remainder of Courtright’s term and plans to run again in 2021.
