American Trumpet Player Creates Symphony of Possibility For Afghan Teen

Philadelphia Orchestra trumpet player David Bilger creates enormous opportunity for Afghan teen Baset Azizi.

David Bilger is one of the professional trumpet players in the country.

He shows off his talent as principal trumpet player for the Philadelphia Orchestra.

But his most inspiring, important performance is being done for an orchestra of one.

Oh, but what a one.

17-year-old Baset Azizi believes he was born to play trumpet, as well.

He had one big problem.

Baset was born and living in Kabul, Afghanistan, a place where you can literally be killed for listening to music, let alone playing what is considered a Western instrument.

How these two came together,

the incredible story they’re creating,

the way this will make you remember the incredible freedom we have here in America,

well, it’s a story CBS News’ Steve Hartman tells so well.

“For the first time in his life, Baset says he can carry around his trumpet in public.”

That line slays me and reminds me how much we take for granted here in America.

David is using a GoFundMe page to help raise funds for Baset’s musical education and opportunity.
