Grateful Sloth Waves and Smiles Back At Man Who Saved Him From Traffic During Rush Hour
Because what says, “Thank you!” better than a smiling sloth?
Why did the sloth cross the road?
Apparently, he forgot the answer as well.
When a Brazilian man came across the slow moving creature in the middle of a busy street in Rio de Janeiro, he did what any animal lover would wish they would do, too.
What would you do?
Jose Aldenizio got out of his car, stopped traffic, picked up the sloth, carried him to a nearby tree and held him long enough for him to latch on.
As he walked across the street, Aldenizio waved back at his new friend.
Incredibly, the sloth smiled and waved back!
The man’s daughter, Gabrielle Araujo, posted the video.
She is a veterinary student and told the news service Globo how proud she is of her dad.
“I, as a student of veterinary medicine, have a pride in my father and his care for animals, and for being able to show people that sentient animals which convey feelings and emotions deserve all our respect and right to life with dignity.”
Obviously, the middle of a busy road is not a natural sloth habitat.
National Geographic Kids explains sloths are native to Central and South America. They are usually happiest in the trees of a rain forest.
How many toes does a sloth have?
NatGeo also explains there are two kinds of sloths. One species has two toes on each foot. The other has three.
Clearly, the star of this story is a three-toed sloth.
