Heart Melting Reason San Diego Chargers’ PR Director Won’t Move To LA With The Team
San Diego’s longtime NFL team, The Chargers, announced earlier this year that they would be making the move two hours north to Los Angeles.
NFL teams do this from time to time.
It’s about bigger stadiums.
But it’s more than just players and coaches who are affected.
The folks behind the scenes need to decide if they are going to uproot their lives.
The team’s public relations director, Bill Johnston, has decided he won’t go, even though he’s been with the team for 38 years.
San Diego Union reporter Michael Gehlken stumbled upon the reason why.
It’s a love story.
One you probably haven’t heard.
One that melted and shattered my heart all at the same time.
The San Diego Union Tribune reports Johnston’s wife, Ramona, has Huntington’s Disease, a devastating genetic condition that has left her unable to speak or take care of herself.
Johnston has great confidence in the care she’s getting in San Diego. He searched, but couldn’t find something comparable in the area where the Chargers are moving.
His heart told him what he needed to do.
Let go the organization he’s worked for tirelessly since college.
You really have to hear or read the entire story to fully appreciate this man, this marriage, and this choice.
And since it is not my original reporting I strongly encourage you to click on the links below.
There’s also a story behind the story which makes me love this reporter’s heart, as well.
Here’s the audio version from WBUR.
