Musher Using Her Sled Dogs To Deliver Groceries To Seniors In Rural Maine
Musher Hannah Lucas says she and her sled dogs just want to help people during the coronavirus
Musher Hannah Lucas and her 12 sled dogs have big dreams.
They live in Northern Maine where this fabulous 22-year-old woman is training to be a sled dog racer in Aroostook County.
They train dragging heavy bags of sand.
A problem and a solution
Working at the store, she saw a lot of older folks taking chances just to get a little bit of food.
She told Business Insider, “I was seeing the elderly coming in and only buying small amounts of food. Stuff like a gallon of milk or eggs or fruit. I really just wanted to help minimize their risk with the pandemic going on.”
So she, her fiance’ and some friends came up with a plan to bring the groceries to folks who shouldn’t be going out.
They have a system
Lucas told WMTW, “We hit the grocery store first. We pick up everything we need just so we have all of that already and don’t have to go back to the store. We make stops along the way, giving the dogs stops along the way.”
“They’re really thankful, and they are so excited to see me and the dogs whenever I show up with the groceries in hand.”

She is paying for the groceries out of her own pocket!
They travel 50-75 miles a day delivering groceries and medicine.
Lucas says she and the dogs will keep delivering as long as there is enough snow on the ground, which she predicts will be until the end of April.
Then she says she’ll find another way.
