BNNVARA reports Jos Baart thought pesky pigeons were once again building a nest outside his third story apartment.

He was in for a huge surprise.

They are rare eagle-owls, the largest owl in all of Europe. They tend to be shy birds so they are rarely photographed in the wild.

Even better, the chicks are curious and engaging. They like to interact with him.

The chicks hatched on Easter Sunday. Bird experts say the babies will probably leave the nest after four months.

Baart says he will be delighted if any of them return to nest next year.

Mama is a lot shyer than her baby owls, but Baart says he hopes she'll feel comfortable enough to return next year to raise more chicks.
