New Jersey Will Recycle Old Christmas Trees To Help Shore Up Beach Dunes

What a great idea to re-purpose and recycle old Christmas trees
Now that the holiday is over, are you wishing you could recycle old Christmas trees?
One beach in New Jersey is asking residents to do just that.
Island Beach will accept Christmas trees on Saturday, January 4th.
They take the trees and line them along the beach.

It helps with erosion and helps Mother Nature build sand dunes.
Coastal ecologist Dominick Solazzo explained to WHYY that Christmas trees help build dunes by capturing sand that is pushed by northeasterly winds during coastal storms.
“Windblown sand becomes obstructed by the fencing and deposited as its velocity slows. The combination of dune fencing and natural vegetation adds the strength of resistance to the dune-like rebar to concrete,” Solazzo said in a 2014 WHYY interview.
One important preparation point. The beach officials say folks need to remove all tree decoration and lights before they drop them off.
